Asia Hamilton

Position: Business Owner
Categories: Business Owner
In 2018 Asia Hamilton opened Norwest Gallery of Art, a community based contemporary art museum that focuses on art from the African Diaspora. As founder and director, Asia chose to locate the Norwest Gallery of Art in the historic Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood of Detroit because the community had been overlooked in recent revitalization efforts that focused primarily on the downtown region. Asia also lives and grew up in the area where the gallery is, hence she understands as a resident, artist, and business owner the importance of art and culture in providing viable, vibrant, walkable communities to advance the people.  The gallery has turned the neighborhood into an international hub for contemporary art with plans to expand its efforts as a staple for creative arts and culture in the community. As a founder, director, and chief curator of the Norwest Gallery, Asia has curated 85% of the exhibitions. Most of which allow herself and other black artists the platform to professionally exhibit their work with no filter. Asia is also the owner of Photo Sensei photography tours and workshops, is an accomplished professional photographer of 20 years, has participated in many community arts projects, and is a 2018 Knight Arts Challenge winner.
